Beginner Sewing Class
Never used a sewing machine before? Our 'Online Learn to Sew Class' is the perfect place to start! If you live outside York, are unable to attend an in-person workshop, or simply prefer to learn from the comfort of your own home, this friendly and practical two-hour class will introduce you to the basics of sewing.
Hosted via Zoom, you’ll be guided through everything you need to know to confidently use a sewing machine and start creating your own projects.
It’s a relaxed, hands-on class designed specifically for complete beginners, so no previous sewing experience is needed.
What you’ll learn During the class:

- How to safely use a sewing machine
- How to set up and use the different components of your machine
- How to sew a straight line
- How to wind and insert a bobbin
- How to change a sewing machine needle
- Basic sewing techniques and tips
- How to make your own simple sewing project
What you’ll make
We’ll show you how to make a simple cushion cover, which you can sew along with us during the class. It’s a fun and achievable project that gives you the opportunity to practise the skills you’ve learned while creating something you can use at home.
What you’ll need
Before the workshop, please have the following ready:
- ½ metre of fabric (approximately 50cm x 110cm or 140cm wide)
- 1 cushion insert
- A sewing machine in good working order
- Basic sewing supplies, including thread and scissors

Once you’ve booked your online sewing class, a member of the Sewcialising team will be in touch to arrange a date and time that works for you.
The class takes place live via Zoom or Facetime, so you can learn from the comfort of your own home.
