Christmas Fat Quarter Ideas
Now that the nights are drawing in and the weather is cooling down, we at Sewcialising are getting ready for our Autumn and Winter sewing. We all like to be prepared well in advance for our festive sewing projects and so our Christmas fabrics and fat quarters are now in stock. Fat quarters are a brilliant way to add a handmade touch to your Christmas without taking on a huge project.
Here are five fun, festive and beginner-friendly projects you can make using fat quarters - perfect for gifts, decorations, or just enjoying a crafting afternoon at home.
-
Reusable Gift Bags
Swap your wrapping paper for fabric! Small drawstring gift bags made from fat quarters are quick to sew and make even the simplest gift more special.. They are also eco-friendly, reusable, and far too pretty to throw away. Top tip: Use ribbon or twill tape for the drawstring, and mix-and-match different festive prints for a patchwork-style set. Great for: Small presents, stocking fillers, homemade soaps or sweets.
-
Christmas Bunting
Classic, charming and so easy to make. A few fat quarters can become metres of festive bunting to string across your fireplace, banisters or even your sewing room. How to: Cut double-sided triangles or rectangles, sew right sides together (leave the top open), turn out and press. Sew onto bias binding or ribbon. Make it yours: Alternate prints, add felt letters or even mini pom-poms for extra whimsy.
-
Mug Rugs & Coasters
Fat quarters are perfect for making sets of festive mug rugs or coasters. These are great as gifts (especially with a hot chocolate sachet and a biscuit tucked in), or just for making your table look pretty. Materials needed: batting or wadding, backing fabric, and maybe a bit of ric-rac or lace trim. Bonus idea: Use heat proof wadding to protect your tabletop.
-
Mini Christmas Stockings
Perfect for advent calendars, tree decorations or place settings. A fat quarter can easily yield a few mini stockings, especially when mixed with coordinating solids. Add a twist: Personalise with initials, felt appliqué or even tiny bells. Sewing tip: Use pinking shears for the top edge or add a contrasting cuff for a more finished look.
-
Fabric Bowl Covers or Jar Toppers
If you’re gifting homemade treats (mince pies, jam, sweets), a festive fabric cover adds a lovely handmade touch. Fat quarters are just the right size for covering the tops of jars or even bowls of dough as they rise! To make: Cut a circle (use a bowl as a template), hem the edges or finish with bias tape, and thread elastic or a drawstring through. Perfect for: Hampers, kitchen gifts, or a zero-waste alternative to clingfilm.
Sewcialising has a range of Christmas fabrics and fat quarter bundles in classic reds and greens, scandi-style greys, metallics, and novelty prints - ideal for all these makes. If you’re in York, pop in and have a browse; or shop online and get them posted straight to your sewing table.
